Without a lot of research- I'm a hospital based coder so this isn't something I use- but it looks like V24.0 is used immediately following the delivery, while V24.2 is at any point during the postpartum period.

I'm also a hospital based coder so this isn't a code I use either, but I agree with what you are saying! :-)

Hi, most of my experience is in hospital-based coding too, but I think I understand the codes.  The V24.0 code would be used for an encounter wherein the patient has just delivered the infant and is presenting for care/observation with no complications.  The V24.2 code is used when the patient has had the usual immediate post-partum care and is returning for a follow-up visit like at 6 weeks.

My encoder tells me that V24.0 can be used as the principal dx when the patient delivers outside the hospital prior to admission and is admitted for routine postpartum care and there are no complications.
