new kid on the block

Hi I just wanted to say hello to the pro's out there.  I am a struggling coder who wants to be VERY good at her job - I am still in school and I am currently on the last half of my class and I have struggled with coding -  I am currently passing my class.  I will talk myself into and out of the ICD-9 codes.  I am  somewhat of a perfectionist and just "passing" my class isn't  enough for me.

Is there anybody else out there who has felt the same way?

Thanks for the greeting...I do READ every post - I just don't reply, yet.  I enjoy the posts because I get to read other scenarios and hopefully answer some of my questions.

Re: new kid on the block

Hi,

I took the test yesterday, I'm sure I failed because I only answered 2/3rds of the test. I just recently finished the aapc study on line course, and although I did really well I don't have any experience coding so I don't have any speed. It has been an overwhelming experience for me and although I know I have a second chance to take the test I at this point am feeling it might be pointless to put myself through such a thing again. I have many years of experience in the medical field so I thought I'd have an easier time with the test. I don't know if there are any tutors out there, but I may attempt looking into that before trying to sit for the test again.

Are you taking a class through the aapc or through a tech?  I believe that coders are type A personalities and we have high expectations which is a good quality. hope it all works out for you!!

Re: new kid on the block

Hi,

Thanks for letting me know that I am not the only one out here.  I have no medical background...just alot of interest in human anatomy, medicines, etc. I breezed through the terminology and hit a brick wall with the coding. I am obviously NOT getting something and I am doing an on-line course so I do not have a breathing body to ask, per se. I have actually considered stopping and going into transcripting but I guess the type A personality takes over and ...here I am. I am also interested in getting a tutor. I have about 3 weeks to finish 6 chapters and I will have to ask for another extension. I am also scared to death of taking the BIG test and getting a BIGGER "0". If you have any suggestions on how to improve on the coding, I'm all ears.

  Thanks,

          Jane

Hi Jane,

How are things going? Did you have a good 4th?. Did you ever get in touch with the AAPC about the study courses they offer? I just received confirmation on my testing date..... I'm a basket case!!! I hope to pass so badly, I don't think I could live through this 1 more time.... I keep testing myself over and over I have been able to improve my speed but I have sacrifieced accuracy to do it. Back to the drawing board I guess...... Let me know if I can help with your coding questions....      sue

Hello -   Go on line and look for some practice timed quizzes.  I know a number of people who thought that helped a lot.  Be patient, go with your "gut" cuz if you have coded at all, it's probably right.

Re: new kid on the block

sue,

I did check out the AAPC - not sure if I want for the entire course just to get the help/answers to questions I have for the coding side.

Have had alot going on at home...alot of deaths in my family and friends - studying especially since the beginning of May..is the last thing on my mind.

My interest in coding came from the interest in how insurance companies can bill my OWN bills/visits to the hospital/doctor. My husband is 8 yrs older and wants to retire in the next 10 years and I would like to have a flexible schedule for that.  I use to work retail and that leaves you no time around the holidays.

Ok jane,

Then why don't we plan on a phone call, I will email you my phone #  on your private email...... you can let me knw when you want to chat and we can go over some of your questions.... If I don't know the answers maybe we can work together to get them.... it seems such a waste to not complete what you've already achieved. It may be something simple that you're missing and then you'll be on your way!!!  I sent you an email  on your private email yesterday  did you get it????   once I know you got it I will send you my phone # and we can chat. I have call around us. and can call anywhere without extra charge if you think that might be cheaper for you, leave me your phone # by clicking the email button below.... I will wait to hear from you     sue
