ICD-9 code please

Hi.  I would really appreciate as many answers as possible.  I am trying to get a definite correct answer and thank you in advance for you help.  This is a question that just keeps coming up:

Her is the situation:  A patient comes in and is hospitalized with symptoms, such as CHF and/or arrhythmia, that lead to an Echo which shows a low ejection fraction, lets say 20%.  They are treated and released with future plans for an elective AICD placement in the future.

This patient returns weeks later and is admitted to the hospital for the elective AICD placement.  The AICD is placed, home medications are administered, everything with the AICD placement goes as planned, and the patient is discharged to home the next day.  What would the primary diagnosis be for this patient on the admission with the elective AICD placement?

Re: ICD-9 code please

I would suggest V53.32 as primary dx for AICD insertion.

Chris.

Hi. i would say the primary diagnosis here would be the condition responsible for the AICD placement i.e. CHF and/or arrhythmia.

V53.32 would be correct for the admission for an AICD per coding guidelines.
