I am sincerely sorry for just popping in here! My name is Texas John and I need the answer to a question. I chose this forum as it was the only with any sign of life. If anyone can help I'd be most apprecative and will help costal with her 3.5 year question!

Both my wife and I visited an ear doctor to have wax removed. We had both seen him in the past. Bottom line, I hadn't seen him in 4 years and joanie in 8. The receptionist, even though we've both seen the doctor in the past, had Joanie fill out a "New Patient" form and charged her $200!

They also gave us each audio tests even though we did not request them. Very expensive!

Sorry...Thanks...John and Joanie

Re: Medical Information Technology Solutions, Inc.

In the US the CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) manual is the nomenclature for reporting physician procedures and services. It's the guideline for reporting services and procedures. A physicianand or other health professionals, insurance companies, etc. are required to follow those guidelines.

CPT identifies a "new patient" as one who has not received any professional services from the physician or another physician of the same specialty who belongs to the same group practice, within the past three years. You indicated that you had not seen the provider in 4 years and your wife had not seen him in the last 8 years. Under CPT guidelines you both are considered "new patients" and a new patient visit could be billed by the provider.

If you did not request the audio tests, they should not have performed them without your permission. However, if they started the testing and you did not stop the testing...they could argue you gave implied approval and now don't want to pay for the service. I would dispute the charges for the testing in writing.

Also you might check with your state's Audiology Board or Association and see if they can give you any guidance on how to proceed, given the situation. Check also with your cities Better Business Bureau to see if any other like complaints have been filed for this provider. (If they have, it would give you additional backup showing that you were not given an understandable option for the service.)

Hi John,
A collegue I got to know specializes in cases just like yours --- personal healthcare financial issues and I always recommend her group to cases like yours.  She works with patients and families and helps them to decipher their medical bills and get issues resolved when the provider has inapprorpiately billed the patients.  Here is the website: This is a group of consultants that educate & assist patients & family members regarding the handling of issues with personal medical bills. www.medicalbilldetectives.com

I hope this helps!
